java ring and its applications

Nowday, people want their information and data to be secure. For example our devices we use are protected by passwords. In our daily life in different sectors where we need privacy. It can be not only frustrating but forgotten while trying to keep with all of the passwords and keys. Keeping this issue, Dallas Semiconductor is developing a new Java-based computerized ring that will automatically unlock doors and log on to computers.

Java ring is a finger ring that contains a small microprocessor with built in capabilities for the user. Java ring is a sort of a smart card that is wearable on a finger .As we know a  ring is a personal thing that the user and only the user carries along anytime and anywhere so that she can authenticate you in every situation.he java Ring is an  extremely secure Java-powered electronic token with a continuously running, unalterable real time clock and rugged packaging, suitable for many applications. Java Ring have number of real-world application. It is mostly implemented in software and available for a large variety of hardware platforms, ranging from mainframe computers to mobile phones and small embedded devices.

Physical Component:
Java ring a stainless-steel ring with  16 millimeters (0.6 inches) in diameter that houses a 1-million-transistor processor, called an iButton which runs Java Virtual Machine (JVM) and it is preloaded with applet and is designed to be fully compatible with the Java Card 2.0 standard . Hence Java ring consist of million of treansistor,single-chip trusted microcomputer with a powerful Java virtual machine (JVM) housed in a rugged and secure stainless-steel case. The ring has 134 KB of RAM (which is 20% more memory than the first computer  ever used (back in 1973): an ancient Danish second-generation computer called Gier which took up entire room) , 32 KB of ROM, a real-time clock and a Java virtual machine, which is a piece of software that recognizes the Java language and translates it for the user's computer system.

Working of Java ring:
Java Ring is programmed with the applets and the programming is done according to our application Whenever the user pushes his ring on a ring reader(Blue Dot Receptor), the corresponding application will take place. Information is transferred between your iButton and a PC with a momentary contact at up to 142kbps. You simply touch your iButton to a Blue Dot receptor or other iButton probe, which is connected to a PC. The Blue Dot receptor is cabled to a 1-Wire adapter that is attached to a spare PC port.

Security:
The barrier substrate and the triple-layer metal construction techniques employed in the silicon fabrication effectively deny unauthorized access to the data stored in the NVRAM. If any attempt is made to penetrate these barriers, the NVRAM data is immediately erased. • Java rings are authorized through Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) so that no one can steal a person's ring and use that ring.Hence it is highly secure.

Applications:
1. The java ring can be used to hold secret codes, credit cards numbers, driver license, other wallet contents, and even some electronic cash.
 2. Have capacity to interact with Internet applications to support strong remote authentication and remotely authorized financial transactions.
 3. For opening the door .
4. E-banking application.
5.  Logging in your PC
 6. Providing security in your car
7. Used to fill forms

Advantages :

1. The Java Rings are very easy and convenient for users.
2.  It can function between -40C to+70C and in much harsher environment.
3. It has higher durability.
4. Easier for administrator to maintain the security infrastructure.
5. Provides real memory, more power, and a capacity for dynamic programming .
6.  Provides authentication to user which is crucial for many applications.

Disadvantages:
1. The cost of implementing the system is high.
2. It needs a high level tools and method in order to program application efficently, reliabily, securily. 3.  iButton has a limited processor capacity and memory , which means an individual might need to carry more Java Ring.

In conclusion, the Java Ring, a piece of jewelry with 6 kilobytes of RAM, represented an early step towards computers that integrate into our physical environment. Although rings aren't widely used yet but  rings could have a number of real-world applications, such as starting your car and automatically adjust to your preferences.
